Review

“…I need to find who I am and follow my own dreams.”

Adaline Morgan is very much in love with Emmit Lewis. Their young love, rooted in a nearly life-long friendship, progressed naturally to a romantic relationship. She stood behind Emmit as he chased his dreams on the NASCAR track, but she’s got dreams of her own. Dreams that are not conducive to living the NASCAR life on the road. One thing she knows, though, is that she loves Emmit enough to let him go so her dreams don’t interfere with his.

“Emmit, I don’t want to leave you.”

Emmit Lewis, on the cusp of NASCAR greatness at the tender age of nineteen, has everything he wants within his grasp. With Adaline – his best friend, biggest supporter and the love of his life – by his side, anything is possible. On the night of his first big NASCAR win, he has big plans to surprise Adaline, but it’s she who surprises him.

“Please don’t fall in love with someone else, Addie.”

Spending their days chasing Emmit’s dreams on the NASCAR circuit, he’s realizing them. His future is bright, and he sees Adaline right there with him as his wife. But confusion nearly overwhelms Addie as warring dreams of a life with Emmit and a career as a nurse pull her in two directions. Addie just isn’t sure that she’s cut out for life on the road, and on the night of Emmit’s big win, as he proposes, she breaks up with him to move to Austin to attend nursing school.

“I was getting the second chance I had prayed for so many nights.”

Time is a thief and steals from the young lovers as distance and separate lives inevitably cause them to drift apart. Three years later, Adaline has graduated nursing school and is offered an opportunity to utilize her skills in Emmit’s world. It time away from Emmit taught Addie anything, it’s that she’s never stopped loving him, and she regrets breaking up with him. She’s grabbing this opportunity with both hands in the hopes that she can win him back. For his part, while he played the part of a playboy in an attempt to forget about Adaline, he’s also never stopped loving her, and he’s not going to mess up this chance to get her back.

“You calm the storm inside of me, Addie.”

With both of them wanting to get back together badly, it is no surprise when they do or that it happens faster than a lap around the track. They quickly work through their issues and are a happily reconciled couple moving forward towards their future. But not everyone on Emmit’s team is as happy as the couple is that Adaline is back in Emmit’s life, this time to stay.

“I just want to make Addie mine already.”

Both knowing what they want – a lifetime together – they waste no time in making up for their three years apart. They are engaged quickly and a destination wedding is in the works. But someone is not happy about their plans and is throwing roadblocks up as the couple moves toward their trip down the aisle. They have a suspect, but is it the right suspect?

“Always you and me, Addie. Forever.”

This was my first novel by Kelly Elliot, and my first NASCAR themed story. I enjoyed it. The plotline moved along quickly focusing not only on the rekindling of Addie and Emmit’s romance but also a suspenseful side story. The characters were well developed and the author’s writing style is very descriptive. The epilogue teases the next book, and it definitely piqued my interest.  4 smooches from me for Kelly Elliot’s Ignite!
